Dog Flu-It’s not just a lick. It’s a pathway to a highly contagious disease

Dog Flu-It’s not just a lick. It’s a pathway to a highly contagious disease

How is Dog Flu Spread?

Dog Flu spreads the same way as the common cold for human. However, the dog flu is not seasonal like the human influenza A and B viruses. Dog flu viruses are most commonly spread through:

Direct contact: (sniffing, licking or nuzzling)

The air: (coughing or sneezing)

Contaminated surfaces: (shared water/food bowls and toys or human hands and clothing where the virus is present)

Where could my dog catch Dog Flu?

The more your dog socializes with other dogs, the higher the risk of contracting dog flu and other infectious respiratory diseases.

Are certain dogs at greater risk for infection?

Dog Flu can be threat to any dog regardless of age or health status. However, certain activities can raise your dog’s risk of infection.

Assess your dog’s risk:

Does your dog…

*Visit doggie daycare?

*Board at a boarding facility or pet hotel?

*Attend training classes?

*Play at dog parks?

*Participate in dog-friendly events?

*Attend dog shows or sporting events?

*Visit a groomer or the local pet store?

*Often greet other dogs during walks?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, your social dog is at risk.

What are the clinical signs of Dog Flu?

Most cases of dog flu are mild. However, up to 20% of infected dogs can have a moderate to severe form of illness.

The common clinical signs of dog flu are:

*Coughing and retching

*Sneezing

*Nasal and/or ocular discharge

*Decreased appetite

*Lethargy

In some cases, dogs may run a fever and demonstrate signs of depression. High fever and pneumonia may be seen in more severe cases. These clinical signs can last from a few days to several weeks depending on the severity of the disease.

What is a Dog Flu?

Dog Flu is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by canine influenza virus. There are currently two strains of dog flu affecting dogs in the United States. H3N8 and H3N2.

How can I protect my dog?

Because dog flu is a relatively new virus, most unvaccinated dogs are susceptible to infection by both viruses. The best protection against dog flu is vaccination. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Guidelines, last updated in 2017, recommend that dogs at risk be vaccinated against both strains.

Should your dog be vaccinated against dog flu?

Your veterinarian is the best source of information regarding the health of your dog. Discuss your dog’s risk and the dog flu vaccination with your veterinarian today.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TRN) Programs-A solution that works! Bergen County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center

What are Feral Cats?

Feral cats are members of the domestic cat species but are not socialized to humans and are therefore unadoptable. Feral cats choose to reside in locations for two reasons: one, there is a food source intended or not and two, there is shelter. Feral cats can lead healthy, natural lives on their own, content to be outdoors.

What is TNR?

Trap-neuter-return (TNR) is a program through which free-roaming cats (not belonging to particular humans) are humanely trapped, sterilized and medically treated and returned to the outdoor locations where they were found.

TNR is about:

*Population Control and permanently reducing the number of cats in the area.

*Lowering cat intake into shelters, thereby lowering shelter euthanasia rates.

*Reducing the spread of disease

*The returned spayed/neutered colony guards its territory, discouraging unneutered cats from moving in and restarting the cycle of overpopulation.

*Removing the vacuum created by ‘catch and kill’ programs. Catch and kill colonies start regenerating in a short time period. The result is not a permanent solution.

The benefits of a TNRed Colony: There are many positive benefits for the cats and the community:

*The cats are healthier since they have been vaccinated and altered.

*The population stops exploding because they are altered.

*There is an initial reduction in numbers as friendly cats and kittens are removed for adoption.

*Over time, the number of cats in the area drops.

*An established colony protects its territory from new cats-the rate of new cats appearing slows dramatically when the colony is managed.

*All cats are vaccinated against rabies, thus protecting the public’s health and eliminating any concern of feral cats transmitting rabies to humans.

*Nuisance behavior associated with unaltered cats stops, resulting in less complaints and happier neighbors.

Your town has TNR. Now What?

If you have concern about feral cats in your neighborhood, please call Bergen County Animal Control at (201) 229-4616 for assistance. We  provide TNR to many towns that contract our Animal Control services.

How it works:

*Call us. We provide a trap with instructions.

*TNR cats can be trapped Monday-Friday, during daylight hours only. Cats cannot be trapped during inclement weather, in an unprotected area or when temperature are over 90 degrees.

*It is your responsibility to set and check the traps throughout the day.

*Once a cat is in the trap, call us: Animal Control will discuss your options.

*The cat will be brought to the Shelter or an approved veterinary hospital for spay/neuter surgery and vaccines.

-Friendly cats and kittens are sent to adoption floor at the Shelter.

-Unadoptable cats are ear tipped and returned to an approved colony or to the pick up location for release. Please note: It is in the best interest of kittens to be brought in WITH their mom. Please trap moms with their babies.

What if your town doesn’t have a TNR program?

For towns with no existing TNR program, it is best to contact your local Animal Control provider for information and guidance. You can also reach out to your local officials and/or Health Department to start a conversation about creating a program.

What do our Colonies need?

At BCASAC, we support numerous colonies throughout Bergen County. These colonies range in size from 6-60 and in addition to the TNR programs, we also provide:

*Education and support

*Traps through Animal Control

*Homes for adoptable cats and kittens from the colonies

How can you help?

We rely on the generous support of our community to keep our programs running smoothly. On a regular basis, we request donations of the following to support TNR cats:

*Dry Cat Food-large bags, any flavor (most in need)

*Wet Cat Food-small or large cans, any flavor

*Large Rubbermaid storage bins

*Mylar blankets

*Medium Styrofoam coolers (i.e. Omaha Steaks, etc.)

*Straw (not hay)

*Open your home as a foster

Donations can be dropped off to the Shelter seven days a week

Thank you so much for your support of our Shelter programs.

Ear tipped cat: Ear tipping is the universal sign of an altered feral cat. While the cat is sedated for the spay or neuter surgery, a quarter of an inch is removed from the tip of the left ear in a straight line cut. The procedure is swift and painless and healing is rapid.

The Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center’s Kitten Foster Program

The Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center’s

Kitten Foster Program

Thank you for your interest in the Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center’s Kitten Foster Program! This program allows us to provide a loving environment for the babies until they are ready to go through the adoption process.

Caring for kittens is a lot like caring for human babies. Depending on their age, they may require bottle feeding every few hours, assistance with elimination, temperature regulation and/or socialization.

As a foster parent, we require a few things:

*Your participation in a 30 minute training orientation, so that you can learn what you need to do, how the program works and have your questions answered.

*A separate area in your home to keep kittens away from other pets. Ideally, this should be someplace that can be easily cleaned and disinfected.

*Your commitment to taking care of our babies until they are ready to be spayed or neutered.

*Adherence to the foster kitten examination schedule provided with the kittens.

BCAS will provide you with the following:

*All supplies for taking care of the foster kittens-food, litter, litter boxes,a crate, towels, etc.

*Access to information that will answer any questions.

*Veterinary staff to monitor the kittens, provide them with vaccines and any necessary medical care.

Frequently asked Questions:

What types of kittens are available to foster?

*Moms with babies: nursing mother with her litter. Mom needs three meals a day. Once the kittens wean, mom will come back to the shelter and the kittens will remain in foster until they are old enough for spay/neuter.

*Bottles Babies: kittens that have come in without their mothers and need around the clock care, including feedings every 2-4 hours, assistance with elimination and a warm quiet space.

*Young Ones: kittens less than  8 weeks old that are not big enough to be spayed or neutered. They need lots of play time, feedings 3-4 times a day and a place away from other animals.

*Unsocialized: kittens of varying ages that may be ‘hissy/spitty’  and uncomfortable with human interaction. They need time to learn to trust and frequent interaction with their foster family.

Why do I need a separate place for the foster kittens?

Kittens sent out to foster are generally too young to be tested for contagious diseases like FIV/FeLV. They may get colds or have a parasite that can be transmitted to your personal pets.

How long will I have  the kittens?

Kittens can be spayed/neutered at two pounds for males and 2.5 pounds for females. Depending on the age of the kittens you are working with, they can stay with you for anywhere from 2-9 weeks.

Is there someplace I can share pictures/stories of my fosters?

Yes! We have a Facebook Group (BCAS Foster Volunteers) where our fosters ask questions, tell stories and get input on the kittens. The page is monitored by the Foster Coordinators and Vet Techs from the shelter, as well as peer volunteers. This is a great resource for both experienced and first time fosters.

All this sounds great!!! What do I need to do to become a foster?

Simply stop into the shelter and fill out an application. You will be contacted to participate in our annual meeting. For more information about the Foster Program, please call the Shelter at (201) 229-4610 and ask for Renee or Rose C.
