Gold Star…don’t leave home without it!

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to keeping Bergen County safe by working with the county’s police agencies, fire departments, hospitals and emergency medical technicians. Emergency response coordination on the countywide level is important so that all of our agencies can more effectively prevent tragedies and ensure the safety of all of our residents.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office is proud to offer the Gold Star Identification Program, a lifesaving initiative for residents over the age of 65 and individuals with autism.

The Gold Star Program provides first responders with vital medical information in the event of an emergency or when an individual is not able to give that information themselves.

Participating senior citizens or autistic individuals are issued a photo identification care that corresponds to a personal file maintained by BCSO’s 24 Hour Operations Unit.

The personal file includes a list of family and emergency contact, current and prior medical conditions and physician’s contact information.

If a Gold Star cardholder ever becomes incapacitated during an emergency. BCSO’s Operations Unit can provide the emergency contact information to first responders.

The Gold Star Identification care can also be used as an additional means of picture identification complete with the Sheriff’s Office Logo and the phone number to the 24-hour Operations Unit in large bold print.

Gold Star…don’t leave home without it!

For more information, please contact the Community Outreach Unit in the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office at: (201) 336-3540.

Bergen County Sheriff’s Office

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office is the largest law enforcement agency in Bergen County. With more than 500 dedicated personnel, we provide a broad range of services that assist the public, support the county’s municipal police departments and safeguard Bergen’s judicial proceedings.

As members of the law enforcement field, the hardworking men and women of the Sheriff’s Office are dedicated to becoming a more integrated part of the neighborhoods in which we serve. With that local focus in mind, our Community Outreach Unit works to maintain a solid relationship between the Sheriff’s Office and the residents of Bergen County, as well as foster a greater understanding of the duties and functions of the law enforcement community.

The Community Outreach Unit offers a variety of public safety initiatives including programs on alcohol and drug abuse, senior citizen and child safety, school violence and youth development. We are always adding and improving upon these programs to further protect our residents and prevent crime in our neighborhoods.

We hope you will follow along with us as we work to ensure that Bergen County remains one of the best and safest places in the nation in which to live, work and raise a family.

The Wound Care Center HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley

The Wound Care Center HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley

Welcome to The Wound Care Center Your Wound Care Experts

Get back your quality of life and be able to live your life to its fullest

If you or a loved one has a wound or a sore that has not started to heal within a month or has not healed entirely in two months, have what is referred to as a “chronic” or “non-healing” wound. There are many factors that can cause a wound to become chronic and there are many types of wounds. Some wounds are associated with complications from diabetes or poor circulation. Other types result from pressure sores and trauma. Chronic, non-healing wounds can have serious health consequences and may adversely affect your quality of life.

At HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley’s Wound Care Center, all we do is heal wounds. Our team of experienced wound care specialists will work with you and your physician to assess your symptoms, determine the underlying cause of your non-healing wound and customize the most effective treatment plan to stimulate healing.

Our treatment plans are designed to complement the care your own physician provides, ensuring that your health care team is always working together to provide the treatment that’s right for you. Most treatments are covered by Medicare/Medicaid, HMO’s and other private insurance plans and may include:

*Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

*Advanced ‘smart’ topical wound care dressings

*Infectious disease management

*Vascular evalution

*Laboratory evaluation

*Nutritional evaulation

*Pain management

*Diabetic education

As the experts in wound healing, the Wound Care Center has a proven track record of healing wounds, even those whose wound has not responded to other therapies can see significant improvement at our center.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Therapy is a treatment in which the patient breathes 100% pure oxygen while inside a pressurized chamber. The air pressure inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber is about two and a half times greater than the normal pressure in the atmosphere. This ‘hyperbaric’ (or high pressure) dose of oxygen helps your blood carry more oxygen to organs and connective tissues to promote wound healing. It also activates the white blood cells to fight infection. HBO can be the primary treatment or it can be used in combination with other treatments. HBO therapy is an outpatient procedure that is provided once daily for approximately four to six weeks. One treatment takes about two hours and is quite comfortable for most patients.

Do you suffer with any of the following conditions?

*Wounds that are slow-to-heal or not healing

*Foot or leg ulcers or wounds

*Surgical wounds that have opened

*Skin grafts or surgical flaps that are not healing

Internal injuries or open wounds caused by radiation therapy

*Bone infection (called osteomyelitis)

*Select acute traumatic and crush injuries

Are you avoiding Colon Cancer Screening?

Discover the facts and you’ll come out hiding.

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable, yet least prevented cancers. If you are 50 years old or older, it’s important for you to get screened.

Why? Screening offers the opportunity to find colon cancer or polyps to stop disease progression.

Avoid Cancer by removing precancerous polyps. Even with the high rates of colon cancer, if its found early enough, it is highly treatable. Four out of five with colon cancer have no prior family history. Did you know that your risk of colon cancer increases dramatically after the age of 50?

But with regular screening, over 90% of cases can be stopped before the cancer advances.

Stage One : 94% Survival Rate

Stage Two: 82% Survival Rate

Stage Three: 67% Survival Rate

Stage Four: 11% Survival Rate

You have screening options:

Noninvasive Screening:

*CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy) uses computed tomography to create both 2-D and 3-D views of the inside of the colon and rectum to detect precancerous growths (polyps).

*Fecal Occult Blood Tests detect blood in your stool, which may indicate colon cancer.

Invasive Screening:

*Colonoscopy uses a thin tube with a camera attached to allow your doctor to look inside the colon and check for cancer or precancerous growths (polyps).

Future of Screening:

*On the horizon, researchers are looking into advanced DNA technology as a potential noninvasive method to detect both cancer and precancerous cells.

*Noninvasive tests may be completed at home.

Talk to your doctor about which screening method if right for you.

Cut your flu risk in half: Washing your hands at least three times a day can help.

Cut your flu risk in half: Washing your hands at least three times a day can help.

Read for more information on cold and flu:

*Preventation

*Symptoms

*Treatment

Preventing colds and the flu is in your hands.

Following the tips below can cut your flu risk in half.

Wash your hands often!

*Use soap and water. Use a towel to turn off the faucet and open the door.

*If there’s no water, use a hand sanitizer that contains alcohol.

Stop the spread of germs.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Disinfect solid surfaces at work and home often. (e.g. door knobs, TV remotes, etc.)

Don’t touch your eyes, nose and mouth.

Avoid close contact with people who have a cold or the flu.

How can you tell if it’s a cold or the flu?

Cold: Symptoms develop slowly and are usually milder. May include:

*Fever up to 102F

*Runny or stuffy nose

*Mild Fatigue

*Slight muscle aches

*Mild Headache

*Sore throat

*Sneezing

*Watery eyes

*Can last 2-14 days

Flu: Symptoms come on suddenly and are more severe. May include:

*Fever over 102F

*Stuffy nose sometime

*Extreme fatigue

*Dry cough

*Muscle aches, especially in arms, legs and back.

*Headache

*Nausea

*Chills and sweat

*Loss of appetite

*Can last 2-7 days but cough and fatigue may linger for 2-3 weeks

Fact: Antibiotics don’t work on cold and flu viruses.

Treating colds and the flu is about comfort.

*Get lots of rest, especially while you have a fever. Rest helps your body fight illness.

*Drink lots of fluids. This helps loosen mucus.

*Soothe a sore throat by gargling with warm salt water or try throat spray or lozenges.

*Use saline (salt water) nose drops.

*Avoid alcohol and tobacco. They can make the cold symptoms worse.

If you have flu symptoms, call your healthcare provider if :

*you are 65 years old or older, pregnant or have a chronic medical condition such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease.

*your illness seems severe.

*you have a young child with flu symptoms.

Your doctor may prescribe a flu antiviral drug. But it works best if started within 2 days of getting sick.

Tylenol is the #1 doctor-recommended brand of pain reliever/fever reducer for cold and flu symptoms. Tylenol is different than other pain relievers.

*Tylenol (acetaminophen) won’t irritate your stomach the way aspirin, naproxen sodium (Aleve) or even ibuprofen (Motrin, IB, Advil) can.

*Tylenol doesn’t interfere with aspirin heart therapy the way ibuprofen can.

*When taken at recommended doses, Tylenol won’t affect kidney conditions the way ibuprofen, naproxen sodium or aspirin.

*Use Tylenol products for reducing fever and relieving body aches, sore throat and headache.

Read your medicine labels. Always read and follow the label. Do not take more than directed and never take more than one medicine that contains acetaminophen at the same time.

*Disclaimer: This information was taken from a pamphlet provided by Tylenol. If there is any additional information that you need, please call the above number for more information.
