Heel Pain: Most commonly asked Questions

Heel Pain: Most Commonly asked Questions

Many people complain of heel pain that is worse with the first step in the morning. What is the usual cause of this?

Pain that increases with the first step in the morning and then decreases as the day goes on is usually associated with a heel spur. This is caused by a foot that flattens excessively. There is a tendon that is on the bottom of the foot, which runs from the heel to the toes (called the Plantarfascia). The function of this tendon is to assist in pulling the arch up once it comes down. If the person’s foot flattens excessively this tendon is torn. These are usually very small tears that begin to heal overnight. When taking the first step in the morning this tendon re-tears. Inflammation and calcification of this area leads to the formation of a point of bone called a heel spur.

What are the treatments for heel spurs?

The treatment consists of initially ruling out other possible causes for heel pain, such as a stress fracture. This is done with the use of an X-ray. The arch is the taped to prevent any stress on the plantar tendon. The patient is allowed to walk for several days and the re-evaluated. If the patient responds with 70% to 80% improvement from this taping, chances are good that a properly fitted orthotic will alleviate their discomfort. If they do not respond well, several cortisone injections may be utilized to calm this area. Once the heel pain is calmed, a properly fitted orthotic will then be utilized.

This information is given to you in the interest of better foot health. Please share this information with friends and family. For more information, call (201) 261-9445.

Health Benefits of Spay/Neuter

Spaying by 6 months of age is the best way to ensure your pet does not have an unplanned pregnancy and will reap the most health benefits from spay/neuter.

Pyometra-1 in 4 female dogs develop a life-threatening uterine infection or ‘pyometra’ during their lifetime. Spaying before the first heat prevents this.

Cancer-The serious & expensive possibility that your pet will develop cancer or tumors of the reproductive organs is completely eliminated because these organs are removed. Spaying before the first heat nearly eliminates the chance your  pet will develop mammary (breast) cancer. Mammary cancer is often fatal since it frequently spreads to the lungs.

Heat/Pregnancy-During a heat cycle, your pet can become pregnant. After spaying, your pet will no longer go into heat, eliminating the mess and discomfort of living with an animal in heat. Spaying also prevents the possibility of pregnancy and the dangers associated with giving birth.

Please call the office for services and prices.

What is a microchip?

*A microchip is a safe, permanent way to identify a lost pet.

*Microchips are more reliable than a collar or tag because they cannot fall off or get lost.

How HomeAgain Pet Recovery Works:

*Complete your HomeAgain personal profile to ensure your pet’s unique microchip ID number is linked to your contact information-include your pet’s information and photo to assist in identification.

*Update your information if you move or if your phone number changes, so you can always be contacted if your lost pet is found. It’s free to update your contact information at any time.

3. Recover your lost pet: If your lost pet is found, the clinic or shelter will scan and ‘read’ your pet’s microchip ID number and contact you.
